Akwasi's Journey of Redemption and Transformation with ORA's Skilled Trades Development Program

When Akwasi first crossed the threshold of our Skilled Trades Development Program (STDP) at The Oaks Revitalization Association (ORA), he brought with him a story that was both heartrending and hopeful. Referred to us by the Toronto Police Service, Akwasi's journey had been a tumultuous one, marked by numerous encounters with the law, periods of incarceration, and the constant, watchful presence of a GPS ankle bracelet during his house arrest.

Our initial meeting with Akwasi was profoundly moving. In the modest confines of his home, he shared with us his life story — a narrative steeped in mistakes, misfortunes, and a palpable sense of regret. As he recounted his experiences, it became glaringly clear: the depth of his remorse for the pain he had caused others, and the unyielding determination he harbored to forge a new path in life.

The STDP, designed as a beacon of hope for those seeking redemption and transformation, found in Akwasi a perfect embodiment of its mission. Committing himself wholeheartedly to our program, he embarked on an intensive mentoring regime, dedicating his weekdays to a rigorous schedule of personal growth and learning. Throughout these sessions, Akwasi's evolution was remarkable — his eagerness to emerge as a positive influence in his family and community shone through every step of the way.

Our mentoring covered a spectrum of essential life skills: from Conflict Resolution Strategies to De-escalation Techniques, from nurturing and managing relationships to understanding family dynamics, and even encompassing aspects of physical well-being and health maintenance. These sessions were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the comprehensive mentoring he received.

Once Akwasi demonstrated substantial progress in mentoring, we transitioned him to the skilled trade training phase with our program partner, LiUNA Local 183 Training Centre. Here, he delved into the world of construction, acquiring skills across various sectors — from Sewer and Watermain to Residential Handyman work. This hands-on training was designed to mirror a real-world construction setting, preparing him for the challenges of the industry.

Under the continued guidance and unwavering support of mentors Joe William and Mark Tenaglia, Akwasi excelled in his training, successfully acquiring all necessary certifications and qualifications.

Post-training, Akwasi's transformation was nothing short of remarkable. He secured full-time employment in the masonry sector, joining the ranks of unionized members at LiUNA Local 183. His journey from a life overshadowed by regret and house arrest to one brimming with purpose and hope is a testament to the power of determination and the right support.

What resonates most about Akwasi's story is his profound desire for change, eloquently expressed in his own words

I want to feel like a man, to contribute to my family and my community, and never return to my old life.

His journey with ORA and STDP is a shining example of how empathy, guidance, and opportunity can genuinely transform a life, reducing the likelihood of recidivism and paving the way for a future filled with promise and fulfillment.

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.

In the skilled trades, every day brings something real. You can see the results of your effort — a wall built, a room finished, a foundation laid strong and steady. That’s pride. That’s purpose.
