The Art of Concrete

Mark Tenaglia • Dec 22, 2023

Our clients are on an exciting journey, delving into the intricate and rewarding world of concrete. They are not just learning; they are embracing the art and science behind this vital aspect of construction.

Each day, they engage with mathematical calculations, not just as abstract numbers but as the language of precision that guides their hands and tools.

As they measure, layout, and level, these aspiring cement finishers are gaining more than skills; they're developing a keen sense of attention to detail. Each measurement they take, every line they draw, is a step towards mastery in their trade. They're not just trainees; they're artists in the making, learning to transform raw materials into structures of strength and durability.

In our sessions, the use of hand and power tools like floats and screeds becomes more than a routine task. It's a craft, honed by practice and patience. As they glide floats over concrete, bringing surfaces to a smooth finish, or use screeds to create level perfection, they're not just working with materials; they're giving life to their visions.

This journey is about more than just acquiring skills; it's about developing a passion for the craft of cement finishing. Our clients are on their way to becoming not just workers, but artisans who will leave their mark on the world one concrete structure at a time.

When Akwasi first crossed the threshold of our Skills Trade Development Program (STDP) at The Oaks Revitalization Association (ORA), he brought with him a story that was both heartrending and hopeful. Referred to us by the Toronto Police Service, Akwasi's journey had been a tumultuous one, marked by numerous encounters with the law, periods of incarceration, and the constant, watchful presence of a GPS ankle bracelet during his house arrest.
