The Builders Will Rise: A Message of Hope for Tradespeople Across the Nation

June 9, 2025

There is a quiet strength in those who build. The ones who rise before the sun, pull on their boots, and step out into the world to move earth, pour concrete, raise walls, wire homes, and lay the foundation of entire communities. These are our tradespeople — the unsung heroes who turn blueprints into skylines, who build what the rest of the world takes for granted.

But right now, many of our builders are hurting.

Across the country, tradespeople are facing challenges they never expected. Job sites have slowed. Contracts have dried up. The promise of steady hours and secure income feels just out of reach. For some, it’s the weight of the economy. For others, it’s the burden of a criminal record, the grip of addiction, or the scars of trauma and loss. Too many are questioning their place in this industry — in this world.

To those tradespeople, we say this:

Hold on. The story isn’t over.

At the Oaks Revitalization Association (ORA), we’ve worked with hundreds of individuals who once believed they had no future. Men and women who were cast aside, overlooked, underestimated. But we’ve also watched them rise — not because things got easier, but because they refused to quit. They leaned into mentorship. They showed up early. They stayed late. They rebuilt themselves, one brick at a time.

We believe in the power of the skilled trades to transform lives — not just economically, but emotionally and spiritually. There’s something sacred about the work tradespeople do. It’s tangible. It lasts. It shapes the world. And in a time when so much feels uncertain, it reminds us that we can build something better — for ourselves, for our families, and for the generations to come.

Rock bottom is not where the story ends — it’s where the foundation is poured.

Whether you’re battling unemployment, recovering from incarceration, trying to stay clean, or simply trying to provide a better life for your kids — know this: you are not alone. Your work has value. You have value. And with the right support, the right training, and the right community behind you, you will rise.

We see you. We honour you. And we’re building alongside you.

Because the truth is, the world needs its builders. And the strongest ones are forged in fire.

The builders will rise.

Under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford’s government, Ontario is building a workforce that is strong, skilled, and reflective of our province’s diversity. A workforce where youth from marginalized communities can access real careers, earn real wages, and contribute to a prosperous Ontario.

At The ORA, we believe knowledge and training are the first steps toward independence and empowerment. When you learn a skill, you’re not just gaining a job. You’re discovering options.

Today, our clients had the incredible opportunity to hear from Mr. Jack Oliveira, Business Manager of LiUNA Local 183, a leader who has lived the journey, earned the respect, and built a legacy through hard work and loyalty. His message was simple, strong, and unforgettable: “You can sleep when you’re dead.”

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.

In the skilled trades, every day brings something real. You can see the results of your effort — a wall built, a room finished, a foundation laid strong and steady. That’s pride. That’s purpose.
