Augusto’s Journey from Hardships to Hope

December 10, 2024

Augusto’s journey is a remarkable testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of opportunity.

Born in Saint Lucia and moving to Toronto at 13, Augusto’s early life took a challenging turn as he fell into the difficult environments during his teenage years. This led to a chaotic lifestyle and a prison sentence that spanned over a decade. After his release at 35, he faced further setbacks, including a brief return to prison. Determined to change his trajectory, Augusto made a pivotal decision to join The Oaks Revitalization Association’s Skilled Trades Development Program STDP.

Through the program’s guidance and support, Augusto embraced a new path. Starting with LiUNA Local 183’s "Intro to Construction" program, he overcame initial skepticism and worked diligently to acquire essential skills, safety certifications, and coping mechanisms. His dedication paid off as he transitioned into the skilled trades, securing a role in Heavy Civil on the transformative Ontario Place project. Membership in the union provided job security, benefits, and the ability to support his family while pursuing a meaningful career.

Today, Augusto’s life is marked by stability, fulfillment, and purpose. He envisions a future where he owns a home and runs a construction business. Augusto's story is a testament to the power of opportunity, perseverance, and a supportive network. From life’s hardships to a thriving career, Augusto is proof that every challenge can lead to a new beginning and inspire others to pursue their own transformation.

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.
