Omar's Journey That Changed Everything

December 17, 2024

Omar’s journey is a powerful reminder of how life can take a positive turn when the right opportunity meets determination.

Omar shares his inspiring story of growth and transformation through the Oaks Revitalization Association’s (ORA) Skilled Trades Development Program (STDP), delivered in partnership with LiUNA Local 183. When Omar came across the program, he was skeptical. The idea of a free training program offering real pathways to a sustainable career seemed almost too good to be true. Still, with no clear direction at the time, he decided to take a chance. That decision became a turning point in his life.

For eight intensive weeks, Omar committed himself fully to the program. He woke up early each morning, braved long commutes, and embraced every challenge the training and mentorship threw his way. The journey wasn’t easy, but Omar pushed through, fueled by the desire to create a better future for himself. What Omar walked away with was far more than technical skills and certifications. He learned discipline, built confidence, and developed a mindset rooted in perseverance. The mentorship and support from the program’s team gave him the encouragement he needed to keep going.

Now, Omar stands as a testament to the program’s impact. Equipped with certifications and a renewed sense of purpose, he has a clear vision for his future in skilled trades. He describes unionized work as more than just a job—
it’s a brotherhood where everyone looks out for one another and goes home safe at the end of the day.

Omar credits the unwavering support of the ORA and LiUNA team for helping him believe in himself, overcome obstacles, and emerge stronger than ever. His story is a shining example of what’s possible when opportunity, determination, and the right support system come together.

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.

In the skilled trades, every day brings something real. You can see the results of your effort — a wall built, a room finished, a foundation laid strong and steady. That’s pride. That’s purpose.
