The Enduring Value of Canada’s History and Virtues: Building a Strong Future for All

November 7, 2024

At the Oaks Revitalization Association (ORA), we believe that the courage, resilience, and tenacity demonstrated by Canadian soldiers in some of history’s most defining battles—Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Dieppe, and Juno Beach—are qualities that transcend time.

These virtues are not just remnants of history but are the very foundations upon which we strive to build a brighter future for our clients. For those pushing against the barriers to break into the middle class, especially from marginalized backgrounds, these lessons are crucial, offering both inspiration and a roadmap to success.

Connecting our clients to Canada’s legacy isn’t about glorifying every part of our history uncritically. It’s about recognizing that the nation they strive to join economically is theirs to share in. How can one fully claim a piece of Canadian prosperity, or truly feel part of its promise, if they are taught to feel estranged from its achievements? Just as we acknowledge the wrongs committed against the First Nations—a painful chapter that must not be forgotten—we also affirm that these mistakes do not cancel out the admirable achievements and values that have shaped Canada. Embracing our heritage is not about ignoring faults but about building strength and confidence on the shoulders of our shared past.

A healthy love for one’s country is not a blind love; it’s a desire to see it grow and improve. We should acknowledge our forefathers’ missteps without diminishing our rightful pride in what they achieved for Canada as a nation. This is why we celebrate Canada’s strengths and meritocracy and push back against voices that promote guilt as the sole lens through which we view our past. Vilifying success and discouraging achievement risks breeding a society that sees ambition as a flaw. Instead, we advocate for a mindset that celebrates hard work, encourages excellence, and inspires individuals to reach higher. For our clients, who often come from challenging backgrounds, this can mean the difference between staying locked in a cycle of hardship and breaking free into opportunity.

The warrior spirit that brought victory at Vimy, the endurance at Passchendaele, the unyielding courage at Dieppe, and the unbreakable resolve at Juno Beach—all of these qualities are what we aim to instill in those we work with. These virtues are not relics of the past; they are powerful, living values that we cultivate in our clients to help them succeed, break into middle-income careers, and achieve stability for themselves and their families. Through these enduring Canadian values, we remind them of their rightful place within this nation’s narrative—a place earned through effort, resilience, and a shared commitment to Canada’s best future.

Let us move forward with pride in our history, strength in our values, and a determination to see all Canadians succeed.

Under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford’s government, Ontario is building a workforce that is strong, skilled, and reflective of our province’s diversity. A workforce where youth from marginalized communities can access real careers, earn real wages, and contribute to a prosperous Ontario.

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.

In the skilled trades, every day brings something real. You can see the results of your effort — a wall built, a room finished, a foundation laid strong and steady. That’s pride. That’s purpose.
